The name of this neighborhood pretty much says it all. Panoramic Hill rises up from behind California Memorial Stadium atop the UC Berkeley campus, but it feels about as far from academic and urban life as you can get.
The amazing views are not the only attraction. This compact neighborhood is also a model of environmentally sensitive development. Indeed, Panoramic Hill features no less than eleven homes listed in the State Historic Resources Inventory, including homes designed by local architectural legends Julia Morgan, Bernard Maybeck, and Walter Steilberg.
Up here, the natural environment cascades down and pours over the rising urban environment. The unique “vernacular” homes have been designed with natural materials to complement their hilly, irregular lots and blend harmoniously with the surrounding trees.
You have to count the rough, narrow, winding roads and tight switchbacks as part of the charm. Certainly they keep out unwanted traffic.
Panoramic Hill Recreation
You’re surrounded by nature up here: canyons, hiking trails, woodland, open land.
Panoramic Hill Shopping
Panoramic Hill is only a few blocks from all the shopping, services, and other amenities of Berkeley’s Elmwood and Southside neighborhoods.
Panoramic Hill Transportation
Like the shopping, there’s lots of transportation nearby, just down the hill.
